Getting Your Back on Track!
Suffering from back pain doesn't have to be forever
Are you troubled with a sharp or achy pain in your back, does it hurt to sit at work or drive, you can’t sleep or roll over in bed and are you exhausted? Sound familiar–you are not alone as 4 out of 5 Canadians are part of the epidemic of low back pain in Canada. In fact, it has been reported that in a period of as little as 6 months 5 out of 10 Canadians will have low back pain. Back pain is a very common condition that can have many complex layers, and a huge impact on your life. Often times back pain can occur unexpectedly from simple movements such as bending over to tie your shoelaces or a big sneeze during this flu season. You may wonder, how is this possible and what can you do?
Fortunately, we are blessed with a neighbourhood rich in trained professionals to help you through this period of pain and more importantly help prevent it from happening again! Chiropractors are one of the largest primary care professions in Ontario that treat the musculoskeletal system. A chiropractor must be a detective, sifting through postural changes, asking detailed questions of painful limitations and systematically testing different joints and muscles to understand the likely cause of your symptoms. Once we arrive at our diagnosis, we discuss with you what your options are for care and if chiropractic is the right choice to help promote your recovery. We provide therapy primarily using our hands, to perform therapeutic and non-invasive treatments. Beyond back pain, there are many reasons to seek chiropractic care such as neck pain, headaches, strains and sprains, poor posture, sports injuries and arthritis, to name a few.
The 5 most dangerous words are: “maybe it will go away”
We keep convincing ourselves this true until we are unable to move without pain. For those of you who have personally experienced a period of low back pain (statically that is 80% of us, at some point in our life), you can relate. In chronic cases where people have suffered from pain for many years, it is likely a multifactorial problem. Precursors such as poor posture and ergonomics can amplify the effects of muscle strength imbalances and joint dysfunction. For many musculoskeletal conditions, such as low back pain, chiropractic care is one of the primary methods of treatment. However, when a multi-disciplinary approach is necessary, a chiropractor will coordinate with other health care professionals to ensure the patient gets what they need.
We are here to help
Chiropractic care focuses on restoring function and improving posture, flexibility and muscle strength imbalances to help promote healing. As primary care practitioners, we also have a duty to refer patients to physicians should they require pain medication, advanced imaging like an MRI or CT scans and potential referral to a neurologist or orthopedic surgeon. One of the most common statements that patients make after beginning chiropractic care is, “I wish I had not waited so long to finally get relief.” With so many people affected by low back pain, we are lucky to live in an era where physicians, chiropractors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, massage therapists, naturopaths, nutritionists and psychotherapists work as a team to provide the best possible patient-centred care. The good news is that we are right in your neighbourhood, ready to serve you and help promote your healthy living!
